collage groups.

These pieces are an extension of the grouping works created in my practice. They're smaller and quite conceptual in imagery. They act as experimentation's in process and material as they mix smaller pieces together to create the collage groupings.

A majority of the pieces are created on a trimmed MDF chipboard base which have a structural quality which is reliable and safe: which leads me to think about themes of the family. The pieces are collages based around individual memories.

1. Image transfer onto MDF wood

materials. Printed image, image maker, PVA Glue, MDF wood

presentedStuck to the MDF chipboard background

aboutPrinted image of a light leak from a scanned super 8 film frame. The image was used in an image transfer onto the MDF material and left to dry. PVA glue was applied over the top.

2. Painted white mark

materials. White acrylic paint

presentedPainted directly onto the surface of the MDF Chipboard

aboutPainted mark directly onto the MDF chipboard. Its made to reduce the texture on the wood - adding a plane of smoothness which acts like a frame.

3. Print process on material

materials. Grey (rag) material, cornflour, acrylic, water, ink, acetate

presentedStuck to the board with tape over the white acrylic mark and the image transfer on MDF wood

aboutStrip of torn rag material (taken from a memory of working with my grandfather) is painted with a white acrylic, cornflour and water mixture in a rectangle. Left to partially dry and then applied with a piece of acetate. The ink image on the acetate is left to dry first and then soaked in a water and cornflour mixture and then applied onto the material. This reveals a hazy, obscured piece, almost feeling moldy and damaged.

1. Image transfer onto MDF wood

materials. Printed image, image maker, PVA Glue, MDF wood, Poppy Oil

presentedStuck to the MDF chipboard background

aboutPrinted image of a light leak from a scanned super 8 film frame. The image was used in an image transfer onto the MDF material and left to dry. PVA glue was applied over the top mixed with poppy oil. The oil broke down the layers of the paper and transfer resulting in a more visually damaged piece reminiscent of the film slide. Once left to fully dry a small amout of water water adding, rubbing off the layers in areas with added pressure.

materials. White acrylic paint

presentedPainted directly onto the surface of the MDF Chipboard

aboutPainted mark directly onto the MDF chipboard. Its made to reduce the texture on the wood - adding a plane of smoothness which acts like a frame.

3. Duct tape removal piece

materials. Duct tape, printed photograph, fixing spray

presentedStuck to the board with tape over the white acrylic mark

aboutPiece of duct tape used to forcefully remove the image layers of a photograph off. Shows a harshness, an honesty around contextual themes of memory. Its delicate yet harsh. The image is fixed in place with fixing spray.

4. Acetate Print

materials. Sketchbook paper, masking tape, acetate print, watercolours, inks

presentedStuck to the board with blue tack, over the white acrylic mark and the image transfer onto MDF wood.

aboutPiece made to feel like a postcard. Three smaller ink images on acetate used for the pirnt and then painted into with watercolours and inks onto a piece of prepped sketchbook paper.

2. Damaged Polaroid Photograph

materials. Polaroid Photograph (using SX-70 film) taken on a SX-70 camera

presentedStuck to piece (furthest back study).

aboutDamaged Polaroid photo with white protective frame layers removed, revealing the developing layers. Year originally taken is unknown but when taken was left to develop in a box- therefore it's accidentally under exposed. It shows reflection, blankness.

3. Digital drawing

presentedStuck to board on top of the Polaroid, behind the print on grey material and acetate print.

aboutScanned frame of damaged film digitally drawn on iPad software Procreate. This is printed onto paper, trimmed and stuck in place.

4. Acetate Print

materials. Paper, acetate print, inks and fixer spray

presentedStuck to the board with tape (furthest forward study).

aboutPiece made to feel like a postcard; an idyllic memory. Smaller picturesque image of Coventry (taken by my Grandfather), printed and made into an Acetate print.

1. Print of a Print of a Print

materials. Used acetate print plastic, ripped cream paper

presentedStuck to piece over residual mark piece

aboutAcetate print of a sky using an already used piece of acetate for a repeated time. Themes of repetition, safety, calmness, stillness, thought. An idea of residual, erasure as a construct.

2. Cloudscape

materials. Cloudscape photograph printed onto Tracing paper, tape

presentedStuck to surface roud the MDF with tape, left to hang and stuck flat to board (furthest forward study).

aboutCloudscape photograph printed on tracing paper. The fact it is on the tracing paper feels neither here nor there because the image isn't fully visible. It's quite spiritual but the torn mark along the bottom shows the brutal honesty that this will fade- this suggests almost half has already faded away completely destroyed.

3. Residual Mark piece

presentedStuck to board with tape (furthest back study).

aboutThis piece is made with a photograph which was printed onto paper which was soaked in water and a very small amount of bleach. After drying the paper is soaked in oil and then repeatedly rolled onto some watercolour paper. Areas of the paper have picked up residual inks and colours from the photograph which adds the sense of mold, dirt, forgotten.

1. Residual print mark on Canvas

materials. Raw canvas, watered down acrylic mark, PVA glue, MDF wood plate (used for print).

presentedWrapped around the MDF Chipboard based and stapled to the back (furthest back study).

aboutFirstly I used a previously created piece. This was an MDF chipboard piece with layers of PVA glue, cornflour, water and acrylic paint. This became a paste over the wood, in places this cracked adding levels of texture across the board. When this dried I added paint, PVA Glue and water over the top and pressed the canvas to this- the piece is like an etching print in a way. The residual of the cornflour and PVA glue imprinted intself onto the canvas.

2. Ink marks on Canvas

materials. Black ink, canvas and masking tape

presentedStuck to piece with tape

aboutPiece of excess canvas with pieces of tape placed on it. I then splashed on black ink and water, left the ink to dry and peeled off the tape. The piece was included to add a visual element in a contextual piece. It resembles synapses, and sparks of remembrance and/or realisation- epiphanies.

3. Mark on paper

materials. Sketchbook paper, found newspaper, water

presentedStuck to board on top of the Residual print on canvas piece and Ink mark on canvas

aboutI took an old newspaper found in my garage and removed a printed image. I chopped it up and soaked it in a small amount of water so the inks leached into the water. This was rolled onto the sketchbook paper

4. Stained Rag Material

materials. Grey (rag) material, acrylic paint, cornflour, warm water, plastic tub

presentedNailed to the board over the other pieces.

aboutTorn piece of grey rag material placed in the bottom of a plastic tub. Brown acrylic paint, warm water and cornflour is added over the top creating a molded residual mark. Erasure as a construct and quite abstract in nature.

5. Photograph

materials. Childhood photograph

presentedStuck over all the works (furthest forward piece).

aboutChildhood photograph which shares similarities to the works included in this grouping. The colours and textures here remind me of this memory.
